Role in formulation

Adding resin to bitumen

The resin documentation is important, but compatibility is determined by the specific bitumen-modifier pair and the actual mixing mode.

Thermoplastic modifier for dark formulations

Piroplast-2K 30-60, 60-130 and indene-coumarone resin are considered in bitumen additives, mastics, polymer-bitumen and road materials. The purpose of the test is set by the manufacturer: processability, adhesive behavior, heat resistance, stability or other measurable parameter.

  • specify the grade and properties of the base bitumen;
  • record the current modifier and the target effect;
  • set the temperature, time and order of addition;
  • Check the uniformity immediately and after storage.

Production applications

Resin test points

Different bitumen products require different criteria; the general term "for bitumen" is not sufficient to select a batch.

01 Mastics

Roofing and waterproofing compositions

The resin is tested in full composition with fillers, plasticizers and polymers.

In the test: mixing, heat resistance, flexibility, adhesion and drainage
02 · Polymer-modified binders

Polymer-bitumen binders

The grade is evaluated for compatibility with the base bitumen and the polymer part.

In the test: dispersion, stability, separation and target properties of the binder
03 · Coatings

Bitumen protective materials

Selection is based on application, layer formation and performance on the chosen substrate.

In the test: viscosity, flow rate, drying or cooling, adhesion and water
04 · Roads

Road and polymer compositions

Indene-coumarone and dark C9 resins may be candidates for compatible road formulations.

In the test: process temperature, uniformity, deformation and performance

Primary list

What resins to compare in a bitumen laboratory

Dark colour is not a limitation; more important is the softening window and compatibility.

Monitoring

What to compare in bitumen composition

Methods and target limits come from the finished-material specification, not a generic resin-supplier table.

PhaseWhat to measureComparison condition
AdditionTemperature, time, loading orderNo local overheating.
HomogeneityDispersion and lack of separationInitially and after conditioning
RheologyWorking viscosity and processabilityAt a given temperature
Thermal propertiesSoftening, heat resistance, drainageFor the purpose of the material
Low temperatureFlexibility or fragilityIf required by the product
OperationAdhesion, water, deformation, storageOn the finished formulation

Do not transfer the result between bitumens of different origins without repeating the test: the composition of the base matrix can change the compatibility.

Qualification

How to screen a bitumen modifier

The laboratory series must separate the effect of the resin from changes in the regime and other components.

01

Record the bitumen

Grade, batch and initial properties and composition of other modifiers.

02

Set the range

Match the resin softening point to safe addition conditions.

03

Mix the series

Prepare the control and trials identically, changing only the product and dosage.

04

Check storage.

Evaluate properties initially, after conditioning and then in pilot production.

Boundaries of application

When the selection of one indicator does not work

  • If the grade, batch and properties of the base bitumen are unknown.
  • If you want to guarantee improvement without a measurable goal and control formulation.
  • If the dosage and temperature are planned to be transferred from another bitumen system.
  • If purchasing begins before uniformity and storage stability are verified.

FAQ

Technical and purchasing questions

Purpose of resins, selection criteria and preparation of samples.

Which resin is suitable for bitumen modification?

For primary comparison, Piroplast-2K 30–60, 60–130 and indene-coumarone resin are considered. The choice depends on the base bitumen, the temperature and the purpose of the modification.

What does a hydrocarbon resin do to bitumen?

The resin is selected to change the viscosity, heat resistance, adhesion and stability of the composition. At the same time, low-temperature flexibility and compatibility with bitumen and polymer parts are checked.

How to choose the softening point of the resin?

It is associated with the addition procedure, the properties of the current product and the requirements of the finished material. The actual value is confirmed by the certificate of analysis for the batch.

Is one resin suitable for different bitumens?

Not guaranteed. Compatibility can vary between grades and batches of base bitumen.

Is it possible to get a ready-made mastic formulation?

We supply raw materials and help build an initial candidate list. The finished-material manufacturer qualifies the formulation and confirms specification compliance.

What information is needed in the enquiry?

Product type, base bitumen, modifiers, mixing mode, target, volume and region.
